The Laboratoire des Radio-Isotopes of the University of Antananarivo and the IRD in Madagascar organised a restitution workshop of the SeqCOI Project on Wednesday 23 November at the IRD representation in Madagascar in Ambatoroka. The SeqCOI project focuses on the greenhouse gas balances of the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use sector, the so-called AFAT sector. This sector mainly emits nitrous oxide and methane. CO, on the other hand, is mainly emitted during changes in land use, for example during deforestation.

The objective of the SeqCOI project is to provide political and territorial decision-makers in Reunion, Madagascar and Rodrigues with a reliable, easy-to-access and user-friendly tool for calculating the GHG balance (emissions < storage) of the AFAT sector on their territory. The various territories can thus be valued for their capacity either to neutralise GHG emissions, i.e. to absorb as much as they emit, or to constitute carbon sinks (emissions > storage).

The project also aims to strengthen and enhance the knowledge around the project’s themes through the transfer of technologies, methodologies and knowledge, but also by training and building databases in Reunion, Madagascar and Rodrigues in collaboration with the partners ; and to create a group of "junior" experts trained during the project who will develop a tool based on the calculation of spatialized greenhouse gas (GHG) assessments.

About LRI et de l’IRD :

The Laboratory of Radio-Isotopes is a research laboratory directly attached to the Presidency of the University of Antananarivo. The laboratory carries out various high-level scientific research activities, training and expertise in two major fields : medicine and agronomy, where the disciplines studied are essentially soil sciences, environmental sciences, soil biology, agronomy and forestry.

The Institut de Recherche pour le Développement is an internationally recognised multidisciplinary organisation working mainly in partnership with Mediterranean and intertropical countries. As a French public institution under the dual supervision of the Ministries of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and of Europe and Foreign Affairs, the IRD is a major French player on the international development agenda.

IRD’s priorities are in line with the implementation, combined with a critical analysis, of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted in September 2015 by the United Nations, with the ambition of orienting development policies and responding to the major challenges linked to global, environmental, economic, social and cultural changes that affect the entire planet.
